Getting Back into Routine This September

September has arrived, and with it comes that familiar feeling of a fresh start. After long summer days, holidays and a more relaxed routine, the return to school and nursery means getting back into a rhythm- earlier mornings, packed bags, new activities and plenty of opportunities to learn and grow.
While September can feel busy, establishing your weekly routine can make a big difference to your child. And sometimes, one hour a week is all it takes to create a positive habit that supports their development.
Why routine matters
Children thrive on consistency. Knowing what to expect helps children feel secure, confident and ready to take on new experiences. Their regular weekly activities give them something familiar to look forward to and becomes a predictable part of their week.
One hour set aside each week becomes a valuable opportunity for your child to move, explore, socialise and develop new skills- all while having fun.
At The Little Gym, our classes are designed to support children at every stage of their development, from babies and toddlers through to older children. Each week builds on the last, allowing children to practise skills, gain confidence and gradually challenge themselves.
At the Little Gym, the one- hour of class can mean something different for each age group. For our parent child classes, it’s an hour of quality time together or having no limits when exploring, that they may have in a home environment.
For our older kids it can mean seeing their ‘little gym friends’ and challenging themselves in a seriously FUN environment that is slightly different from their perhaps competitive sporting commitments.
One hour. So much development for all of our age groups.
What can really happen in one hour?
Movement: Children have the opportunity to climb, roll, balance, jump, swing and explore how their bodies move. These experiences help develop physical skills such as strength, coordination, flexibility and balance.
Confidence: Trying something new; climbing a little higher or completing a movement independently, or achieving a new skill big or small, gives children opportunities to experience success. Small achievements can build confidence that extends beyond the gym.
Social skills: Classes provide opportunities to interact with instructors and other children, practise taking turns, listen to instructions and participate as part of a group.
Independence: As children become familiar with their class, they can begin to make choices, attempt activities independently and discover what their bodies are capable of.
A sense of achievement: Every week brings another opportunity to learn something new or revisit a skill they have been working towards. Progress might be big or small, but every step counts.
Making it part of your September routine
The beauty of a weekly class is that it can become part of your family’s rhythm. Whether it’s your Saturday morning activity, or a midweek class after nursery, having something consistent and fun in the diary can help bring structure to the week.
In a world where children’s schedules can quickly become busy, having one hour dedicated to movement, play and exploration is something to preserve.
September doesn’t have to mean adding more pressure to your family’s routine. Instead, it can be an opportunity to create one small, positive habit that lasts beyond the first few weeks of term.
One hour a week might seem small. But over a month, that’s four opportunities to move, learn, explore and build confidence. Over a year, it’s dozens of opportunities to practise skills, make friends and celebrate progress.
That’s the difference one hour a week can make.
