Fun to Be Fit!

October is all about getting active, building confidence and discovering just how much our bodies can do!
This month at The Little Gym, our monthly focus is ‘Fun to Be Fit’ encouraging children to develop greater body awareness while building the strength, coordination, agility and confidence they need to take part in all kinds of activities, all whilst appreciating the positive brain benefits in the process!
Fitness for children isn’t about how fast they can run or how many exercises they can do. It’s about helping children feel confident, capable and comfortable in their own bodies.
What is body awareness?
Body awareness is a child’s understanding of where their body is, how it moves and what it can do.
Through gymnastics, children naturally develop this awareness as they learn to jump, balance, roll, climb, stretch and move through different spaces.
For our younger children, this might look like learning to identify different body parts or discovering how to move their arms and legs in different ways. As children get older, body awareness becomes increasingly important for developing more complex skills, from balancing and landing safely to controlling their movements during gymnastics and other sports.
Building strength, coordination and agility
Every movement in the gym provides an opportunity to build physical skills.
Climbing helps develop strength.
Balancing challenges stability and control.
Jumping develops power and coordination.
Running and changing direction develops agility.
Rolling and tumbling help children understand how their bodies move through space.
And because these skills are developed through games, challenges and imaginative activities, children are exercising without it feeling like exercise!
Fitness builds confidence too
One of the most exciting parts of physical development is seeing a child realise: ‘I can do it!’
Whether it’s balancing independently for the first time, mastering a new jump or confidently trying something they were initially nervous about, these little achievements can have a big impact.
At The Little Gym, we celebrate effort and progress, not perfection. Children are encouraged to try, make mistakes, try again and discover what they’re capable of.
That confidence can extend far beyond the gym, helping children feel more willing to participate in new activities, take on challenges and believe in themselves.
This month’s theme (PRE-k)Palling Around with Inspector Insect
October’s lessons bring our ‘Palling Around with Inspector Insect’ theme to life!
When you’re watching your little one run, jump, climb around class, to them, we are flying like butterflies, jumping like grasshoppers and busy like bees!
Through imaginative games and activities, children will explore movement while developing important physical and social skills. Our themed lessons give children a chance to use their imaginations while practising fundamental gymnastics skills- making learning active, engaging and fun.
For our Pre-K children, this month includes milestones such as balancing on one foot, performing a standing broad jump and developing an understanding of different body parts and their functions.
These may sound like simple skills, but they are important building blocks for future movement and physical development.
Why ‘Fun to Be Fit’ matters
Developing healthy movement habits from a young age isn’t just about gymnastics. Children who feel confident moving their bodies are better equipped to enjoy sport, play and everyday physical activities as they grow.
And perhaps most importantly, we want children to learn that being active is something to enjoy.
At The Little Gym, we’re helping children build strong bodies, confident minds and a positive relationship with movement- one cartwheel, climb, balance and big jump at a time.
October is bringing crisp autumn days, colourful leaves and, of course, spooky season!
What could be more exciting for our little ones than Halloween? From spooky surprises to fun-filled adventures, it’s the perfect time to make magical memories, try new things and keep those little bodies moving!
Don’t forget to book your place at our Halloween camps and events to make the most of the half-term holidays. Open for members and non-members. With plenty of fun, movement and excitement in store, there’s something to make every little pumpkin smile!
This October, let’s make fitness fun!
